The voice is how an audience connects with a song. Any yet, the voice is usually the last instrument a singer-songwriter gives attention or energy. Without a strong lead vocal, the song will not get any traction.

Songwriters love to curl around their instruments during the writing process. Upper back and shoulders curled forward, chin sticking out, singing in a half-voice so no one will hear, not even the songwriter.

Unfortunately, you are then stuck with lousy muscle memory for singing the song. Just like learning piano or guitar or trombone, voice training is about muscle memory.

Later when you perform or record the song, there are 2 choices: relearn the song with good vocal technique or not give the song the vocal presence it deserves.

Without this awareness, singers struggle with all sorts of issues that hold their voices hostage with self-doubt, second-guessing, micromanaging and most of all, fear.
