Healing Sound Bath
I’ve always known the power music to transform mood, outlook and brain chemistry, among other transformative properties. Music that is offered with loving energy has healing in its vibrations. That’s in part why people love a live performance. The music enters the body and mind of the listener.
Sound is vibration, what we call RESONANCE. Energy sets the instrument vibrating. Freely released energy allows the sound to resonate, to travel. I always tell my voice students to let the words end up out in the room.
As most of you know, I moved to a paradise called Gulfport, FL. It’s a funky, fun little beach town just outside of St. Petersburg. NYC it ain’t, but I am finding gems living here by the sea.
Last evening I had a new experience with sound/vibration that blew my mind in a wonderful way.
At 6:30pm every Wednesday a group gathers on Gulfport Beach with blankets and yoga mats for a Sound Healing Meditation. Lindy Romez, gives the crowd a “sound bath” of healing with a gong, Native American flute, singing bowls and drums.
Lindy, a musician and former 82nd Airborne Division Soldier, describes Sound Healing on her website:
“An ancient practice that uses the vibrations and frequencies from instruments like Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, drums, gongs and vocals to help relax and heal the body and mind. For thousands of years many cultures have used the deep penetrating effects of these harmonic vibrations as medicine to promote healing well-being.”
I arrived at the beach a bit late because I was being interviewed on a podcast. The interview was supposed to be 20 minutes, but we were having such a great conversation about the power of the voice that we went on for 1.25 hrs.
You can imagine that I was hyped up and fully energized from “performing” on a respected podcast. I laid out my beach mat and the Sound Bath began with the gong. I could feel my body sinking into the sand – mother earth holding me. I didn’t have to do anything but receive the vibrations.
Part of the joy of singing is feeling the vibrations of your own voice. It’s healing. There was a saying when I was growing up, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Meaning that apples keep you healthy. I’m telling you, “Singing a song every day keeps the doctor at bay.”
When Lindy played her drum over my supine body the vibrations went into me. I can’t explain it any other way. The vibration went into me, through me and down into the sand, into the earth.
By the end of the Sound Meditation, I was so profoundly relaxed it was quite difficult to move at all. Driving home from the beach, I couldn’t get my car to go over 20 mph.
Next time you are performing a gig, think of it as giving yourself a healthy dose of healing sound vibration. Give your audience the gift of a Sound Bath. They will love you.
ABOUT SALLY MORGAN
Sally Morgan wrote the book on contemporary vocal technique — literally. Sing Like You Speak® is specifically designed to restore the effortless vocal production that is natural to the human instrument making your singing powerful, joyful and free. Singing so simple it feels like talking to your best friend without sounding trained. Sally has been successfully teaching people how to sing for more than 40 years. That is how she turns decades of learning into days.
Every master begins as a disaster – including Sally Morgan. She gets it that you need to sing for the same reason you need to breathe. She’s felt the pain of not knowing how to release the amazing voice trapped inside. She’s felt the longing to be accepted as a great singer.
That longing became an obsession with finding solutions to vocal challenges. Sally spent many years developing those solutions into what became the Sing Like You Speak® vocal technique that is now empowering singers worldwide.
In both 2018 and 2019, Sally was a featured workshop presenter at SXSW® where she introduced an enthusiastic audience to the power of Sing Like You Speak®.
Sally has helped her clients heal vocal damage, expand vocal range, land a Broadway show, record their original music and tour internationally without vocal fatigue or strain.
