“To me, singing is like talking. If it ain’t natural, it ain’t right.” ~ B.B. King
Your body is your singing instrument. Inside your body. The result of how you use your inside instrument, your sound is heard outside – in a room or into a mic.
If you are always chasing the result, focusing outside the body, then you will not be able to change the habits that create the sound and therefore, you won’t be able to improve your singing or find your unique, natural, signature sound.
For example: If you struggle and strain to sing, be attentive to what you are doing on the inside to interfere with the free flow of breath and sound. Does your voice feel trapped somewhere? Do your best to free that area of muscle tension.
As you become intimately aware of how you are using your instrument you can make the appropriate changes that allow your voice to be free and powerful without any struggle or strain. Always keep in mind that your instrument is perfect. Trust your instrument and use it naturally for confident singing and performance.
Exercise to begin thinking inside your body.
- Inhale as though you’re going to sing then blow the breath out.
- Usually, you will blow the breath as though you’re forming an “oo” as in “food”.
- Check it out. True?
- Now inhale to sing then blow the breath out forming an “oh” as in “Oh no”.
- Feel the difference. An “oh” opens your instrument and lets the breath flow freely. That’s exactly what you want your voice to do – flow freely.
Become aware of how you are using your body, your vocal instrument, to be a great singer. What is a great singer? One who uses their voice naturally and communicates through the song.

Do you trust that your singing instrument is perfect? Not your sound but the instrument itself?
