What a fabulous experience it was to be at SXSW® again this year and to give another Sing Like You Speak® Workshop. I LOVE working with great singers! I always learn so much. The singer in the video below, filmed at SXSW®, was experiencing severe vocal fatigue and just wanted to get through her gig that evening without hurting herself.
Rarely will you see a singer make such a dramatic transition in just a few minutes!
A bit later in this article is another video clip from my Sing Like You Speak® SXSW® Workshop of the step-by-step process I used to get her voice from breathy and unhealthy to a healthy full voice.
SXSW® is a conference of creative innovators and thought leaders from around the world. Over 30,000 people descend on Austin, TX mid-March every year to explore what’s next in the world of music, film, gaming, government, and more. I am honored to have been on the same stage, although not at the same time, as Michelle Obama, Trevor Noah, Shirley Mason, Lauren Mayberry, to name a few.
I’ve been doing Sing Like You Speak® Workshops for a many years and I know that most people walk in believing that there is some essential flaw in their singing. They want to know how to fix that flaw. I want people to leave the workshop believing in the absolute natural perfection of the human voice as an instrument of communication.
Now a bit of what you do not see in the above video – the step-by-step process I led everyone at the workshop through, which is the foundation of the Sing Like You Speak® technique.
Body alignment – posture – is where we always begin because the body is your instrument.
The technique for posture is grounded in the power source – 2” below the naval in the center of your pelvis.
Once the instrument – the body – is open and aligned you then do a simple, opening inhale.
The opening inhale opens the instrument and activates the low back, abdominal and core muscles the are the power behind free singing.
Then to get the breath and sound moving along a clear path through the instrument I showed them a technique that produces dramatic results in releasing a voice that feels trapped inside.
Once a clear path through the instrument is open for sound, then you…
Speak on pitch!
The video below is the full 6 minutes 27 seconds it took for Selene to believe in her natural genius of her vocal instrument. You will see how speaking on pitch allowed Selene to find her voice, her true voice, despite her vocal fatigue. What an amazing voice!
