It is tragic that most people do not know their own power or the power of their own voice. Sometimes it’s even dangerous.
Who would you be today if from the time you were born, you realized that you were powerful? If you knew that you had a voice that mattered? If your creative ideas and their potential were valued?
We are all born as powerful beings. The strength is within you. It’s natural. The tragedy is not knowing you have the power. If you don’t know you have it how you going to use it?
As a small child I had a recurring nightmare in which I am kidnapped by a man and throw into the back seat of a car.
As the car sped away from the curb, I managed to roll down the window just enough to get my head out so I could shout for help. I opened my mouth but no sound comes out. I tried again and again to find my voice. Not even a peep came out.
I was whisked away by the kidnapper to whatever fate he had in mind. I couldn’t find my voice even to save my own life.
It’s a helpless feeling. A hopeless feeling. A powerless feeling.
I believed I didn’t know how to make my voice heard. Nor did I believe that anyone wanted to hear what I had to say or sing. I didn’t know that my voice mattered. I certainly didn’t know it was powerful.
My whole life from that point on has been about finding my voice and helping my others do the same. Interestingly enough, as I empowered my voice, I empowered everything in my life. My confidence soared.
There are millions of folks who have never felt heard. When that feeling of frustration and powerlessness goes to the extreme, it turns to aggression. It turns to violence.
We have recently witnessed a seditious insurrection at the capitol building in Washington, DC. Those who led and participated in the violence against our government are people who do not feel heard. Consequently, they yelled and screamed, bullied and used violence to make their message heard.
If a person is never given permission to have a unique voice, to express feelings and ideas, it robs a soul of confidence. It robs a life of a self-directed path and the conviction to follow that path.
How do you recover from a lifetime of believing your voice will not be heard even when your life depends on it?
Restoring the vocal instrument to its natural power and freedom to express yourself can be learned. I’ve worked with clients who were abused for speaking their minds, for having the audacity to voice a unique opinion. They were able to learn and even surprised by their power.
Yes, I believe that knowing you are innately powerful, that your ideas and your voice have value are vital to a peaceful planet.
Warren Buffett says, “By far the best investment you can make is in yourself.” Developing your communication skills – both in writing and in-person – “can increase your value by at least 50%.”
I couldn’t agree more! It’s a beautiful transformation to watch as my clients find their voice and confidence. They begin acting and interacting in new, positive ways.
Empower your voice! Empower your life!
4 Tips to Get You Started
1. Stand straight and tall in your power
Studies have proven that good posture promotes self-confidence
Your body is your vocal instrument so a strong, open posture promotes a strong voice
2. Say every word clearly and completely
Consonants are the action of your words and make your speech clear and understandable
Make every word you say full and rich with meaning
3. Use your whole self to speak (and sing)
Think of your vocal instrument from your bottom to the top of your head
Say, “Ho, ho, ho!” like Santa and feel all the muscles involved then continue to use them in everyday conversation
4. Listen – to yourself and to others.
Listen to the words and the meaning behind them
Listen even if you disagree. Honor the words if not the opinion expressed
Empower your voice! Empower your life!

Wonderful article, Sally, and so true. Thank you for allowing an opening to listen to the messages of others whom we might not agree with. Also, “every master starts as a disaster ” made me laugh out loud. <3
