Changing your sound with your mind
Recently 2 private singing students, within 2 days of each other, when struggling to sing, said, “Wait a second, I know what to do!”
Each made a mental adjustment after which their singing sounded amazing! When I asked what they did, both students used the exact same words. “I just remembered that it’s easy.”
That’s right! This proves an essential key to rock solid singing: singing responds to your thoughts about singing. Test it out right now.
Without singing at all, think, “Oh no! Here comes the high note!” and observe what your instrument, your body does in response. Bet there’s some pretty tight muscular action happening. Are you reaching up for the note? Are you already feeling embarrassed about messing up, which makes you pull back from making the sound?
Think, “This song is so hard.” Then observe what how your muscles react to that thought. That reaction in your body – your instrument – makes the song hard to sing!
Hold in mind that your family thought you should not sing! How’s that working for you? Not so much, right?
The mind has influence over the body. We embody our thoughts. So change your mind about singing and watch what happens.
Think, “Open my instrument; release the breath and sound.” Observe how your body responds to that thought.
Sing a phrase as you think, “Wow! This is fun!” Observe how does that feels. How different does your voice sound? Is your singing freer? My bet is, yes!
Every day as I’m teaching singers, I see this science proven: thoughts produce a reaction in the body that either gets in the way of good singing or opens you up for good singing.
Singing Tip: Observe your thoughts about singing and then observe how those thoughts effect how you use your body – your instrument – to sing.
Then change your mind – about your singing!

This topic is so important, so vital to learning how to sing, that I have just filmed several new lessons for my online voice lessons.

ABOUT SALLY MORGAN
Sally Morgan wrote the book on contemporary vocal technique — literally. Sing Like You Speak® is specifically designed to restore the effortless vocal production that is natural to the human instrument making your singing powerful, joyful and free. Singing so simple it feels like talking to your best friend without sounding trained. Sally has been successfully teaching people how to sing for more than 40 years. That is how she turns decades of learning into days.
Every master begins as a disaster – including Sally Morgan. She gets it that you need to sing for the same reason you need to breathe. She’s felt the pain of not knowing how to release the amazing voice trapped inside. She’s felt the longing to be accepted as a great singer.
That longing became an obsession with finding solutions to vocal challenges. Sally spent many years developing those solutions into what became the Sing Like You Speak® vocal technique that is now empowering singers worldwide.
In both 2018 and 2019, Sally was a featured workshop presenter at SXSW® where she introduced an enthusiastic audience to the power of Sing Like You Speak®.
Sally has helped her clients heal vocal damage, expand vocal range, land a Broadway show, record their original music and tour internationally without vocal fatigue or strain. Besides teaching workshops Sally teaches private voice lessons and has developed online singing lessons – Sing Like You Speak® Academy.
You can see and hear some of Sally’s clients on Broadway stages, Off-Broadway, in Musical Theater – Regional, on Major Label Recordings, the Conan O’Brian show, A Prairie Home Companion and in Federal Courts, the PA House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate. Sally teaches singing voice lessons in NYC and worldwide on ZOOM as well as online voice lessons on the Sing Like You Speak® Academy http://SingLikeYouSpeak.com/onlinelessons

Hey Tim,
Thanks for your comment. And congratulations on getting your mojo back!
A solid technique, acquired through good training – Sing Like You Speak – will support you beautifully during those times of stress. IN fact, singing during those times can actually help you feel much better.
As a professional singer, you don’t have the luxury of being relaxed every time you perform. It’s actually the opposite! My career is on the line every time I perform, so I use my technique to focus on the process of singing and then the fabulous vibrations and deep breathing begin to raise my spirits.
Keep singing!
breathe,
Sally

So true! Your points are so important!
Being mentally and emotionally relaxed, rested, and stress free is so much more conducive to great singing. I went through a very traumatic period of time due to complications in business, a full 5 year stretch, where I found myself unable to sing like I knew I was capable. I was pretty frustrated and thought I might have lost it, maybe for good.
However, when that negative chapter turned into a much better situation, my voice almost miraculously returned. I was able to hold notes, emote, and sing fluidly with much better tone and control. (Interestingly, stress even affects my ability to memorize lyrics.) I’m now thankful for much greater peace in my personal and business life, where the simple gift and ability to sing well has returned.
